Consular
Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities):
Would you like a role where your judgement, empathy and professionalism can make a real difference to people when they need support most?
Who are we?
The British Embassy Sarajevo is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to recruit a part-time Pro-Consul to join our team and provide frontline consular support to British nationals in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This is a varied and rewarding customer-facing role at the heart of the Embassy's consular work. You will help British nationals facing difficult or unexpected situations, work with local authorities and partner organisations, and collaborate with colleagues in Sarajevo and across our wider regional consular network.
No two days in consular work are quite the same. You may be supporting someone following a hospitalisation, visiting a British national in detention, liaising with local authorities, helping a family following a bereavement, or responding to an emerging crisis.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Consular assistance to British nationals – 20%
• Provide consular assistance in line with UK Government policy, with a particular focus on British nationals who are vulnerable. Support may be provided in person, by telephone or online;
• Handle a wide variety of consular cases, which may include prison visits, bereavement, hospitalisation, violence or sexual assault, child welfare issues, mental health concerns and detention;
• Travel within Bosnia and Herzegovina when required to provide consular assistance;
• Maintain accurate and timely records on consular case management systems, ensuring sensitive information is handled appropriately;
• Maintain accurate public information about Bosnia and Herzegovina on GOV.UK.
Team and regional working – 10%
• Work closely with colleagues at the British Embassy in Sarajevo and across the wider regional consular network to help ensure continuity of service and mutual support, particularly during periods of high demand;
• Provide support to other consular teams in the region when required, which may include answering calls on their behalf.
Working with partner organisations – 5%
• Build and maintain effective relationships with local authorities and service providers, including police, hospitals, prisons, social services and relevant NGOs, to support British nationals;
• Liaise with other diplomatic missions and consular teams as appropriate to share information and best practice.
Document services – 5%
• Prepare and issue documents for British nationals in line with FCDO guidance, including managing the online appointment booking system;
• Print and issue Emergency Travel Documents.
Crisis preparedness and response – 5%
• Contribute to Embassy and regional crisis preparedness activities, including participating in relevant training and exercises;
• Provide consular support during crisis situations affecting British nationals, which may include deployment within Bosnia and Herzegovina or on-the-ground support alongside colleagues.
Flexibility and additional responsibilities – 5%
• Provide occasional out-of-hours assistance for emergency consular cases, with appropriate compensation;
• Take on additional duties as the role develops, depending on operational needs and the successful candidate's skills. This may include administrative or financial tasks, supporting regional work, or helping to organise regional meetings, conferences or visits;
• Where workload allows, there may also be opportunities to contribute to the wider work of the British Embassy in Sarajevo.
Join the British Embassy in Sarajevo and help us support British nationals when they need us most.
Essential qualifications, skills and experience
Our ideal candidate shows:
• Full professional proficiency in English and Bosnian, both written and spoken at a C1 level according to CEFR*;
• At least 2 years’ experience working in a customer facing or service delivery role, where you regularly deal with members of the public;
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain information clearly and sensitively to people from a wide range of backgrounds, including those who may be distressed;
• Ability to show empathy, sound judgement and professionalism when dealing with sensitive or emotionally challenging situations;
• Good organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks, manage competing demands and maintain accurate records;
• Ability to work effectively as part of a small team, including with colleagues based in other locations;
• Confidence using IT systems and digital tools, including Microsoft Office applications (particularly Outlook and Teams), and an ability to learn new systems quickly;
